The Lake Regional Family Birth Center, now under construction on the hospital’s third floor, will be located inside an all-new Women’s and Children’s Unit. “When it opens later this spring, the Women’s and Children’s Unit will meet a long-standing need in the lake area,” says Unit Manager Mary Lou Gamm, RNC-OB. “The doctors, nurses and support staff will focus exclusively on women’s and children’s health care, and patients will benefit from having a facility close to home, dedicated to their needs.” The Women’s and Children’s Unit will offer a state-of-the-art obstetrical surgical suite, a post-anesthesia care unit and private overnight rooms, separate from the Family Birth Center. Services for women will include treatments for pelvic disorders and care following such procedures as hysterectomies. Advanced care for infants and children The new unit also will welcome pediatric patients needing overnight care for such diagnoses as dehydration, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), asthma and appendicitis. “We’ve had a Level II Nursery at Lake Regional for a few years, and our Family Birth Center staff members have received extensive training on advanced care for infants and pediat- ric patients,” Gamm says. “They will use their skills to keep more babies and children here, near their families, for treatment.” Learn more at lakeregional.com/ womenandchildren . Allergic to Penicillin? Get Tested to Know for Sure D id you know that 80 percent of people who have an allergic reaction to penicillin lose their allergy within 10 years? That means many people avoid penicillin long after it stops being a problem for them. You can find out whether you still have a penicillin allergy with a penicillin skin test at Lake Regional Outpatient Services. Getting tested is a good idea because having penicillin as a treatment option can save you from side effects of more powerful antibiotics. The skin test is safe and painless.
